What is the ePAIN
How to use the ePAIN
ePAIN gives a visual analogue scale to rate a patient-perception of pain. By moving the slider, patients can choose the level of pain they are feeling. Each point on a scale consists of a number, an image and a description to facilitate pain measurement.
The ePAIN Score
The measurement of pain remains problematic due to the subjective nature of pain perception. The pain scale provides a simple method of assessing immediate patient needs.
The impact of pain on healing
Poorly managed patient pain has adverse physiological and psychological implications. On a physical level, prolonged, unrelieved pain suppresses the immune system increasing the likelihood of postsurgical infection and poor wound healing. Post-surgical pain reduces patient mobility, increasing the likelihood of complications, such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolus, and pneumonia, and impairment of the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and renal systems.
Inadequately managed pain also affects the psychological state of the patient and family members, with patients reporting increased feelings of anxiety, depression, anger and sleeplessness. Effective pain management continues to evolve but is largely reliant upon an accurate assessment of patient needs. Studies also show an increase in patient satisfaction when patients are actively involved in their treatment.
Benefits of timely and appropriate pain management include improved quality of life, decreased length of hospital stays, lower readmission rates and better overall patient outcomes.
ePAIN offers health care providers a measure of patient-perceived pain.
The pain-scale is self-explanatory and easy to use.
ePAIN allows patients to track their pain and be more aware of possible triggers or pain relief as they can reflect on their pain score. This information can be useful not only for the patient but also for a doctor to have a better insight in order to create a more successful pain management strategy.
The pain scale consists of numbers, images and descriptions to be easily understood regardless of the age or communication preferences.
